MEET MOREY WAKIBIRU – SANAA SAFARI
If you have not seen a hilarious church secretary, Bwana Francis, on a random WhatsApp status you need to update your contact list.
Eric Murimi Ireri, alias Morey Wakibiru is a sensational exravagantly funny comedian who has won the hearts of anyone who understands the kikuyu language.
Born in Ngariama, Gichugu Constituency, Kirinyaga County, Eric had a good and comfortable childhood even after the demise of his father. From a tender age he was creatively hilarious and was even crowned ‘King of mchongoano’. He studied Bachelor of Commerce(BCom) and Chinese in Kenyatta University. His effortless humor was not taken very seriously until he got to campus and was persuaded by his friends to audition for the Churchill Show.
The comic lad says that one of the biggest challenges he’s had to face is being accepted by the masses. People have not yet embraced comedy as a worthy talent and still perceive it as unimportant. Financing for the production of his art has also been problematic since it’s expensive. Finding serious inspired individuals in the same niche to partner with has also been a struggle. He further claims that getting endorsements and promotions from well-known artists which would go a long way in improving his recognition in the industry is a hassle.
Bwana Francis, the hilarious church secretary is a character inspired by people’s relatability with the church and how funny he found the church secretaries growing up.
“Content flows naturally.” Eric says. He only writes down his material so as not to forget.
Morey has been featured on a number of platforms; The Churchill Show, Comic show in KU TV, Centrocomedy in Inooro TV, Kiengei live show, Comic show in KBC and finally started posting content online.
He mostly gets his inspiration from Kartelo, who was his close friend as they began pursuing their art. Gabriel Iglesias, alias FLuffy who’s an American comedian is also a great inspiration. Just like Churchill, Morey aspires to create a platform to promote comedy as a significant art to pursue.
Eric hopes to use his comedy to teach and preach the Bible to inspire Christians on how to live according to the word.
“Comedy or talent is like a curse or a drug. It never leaves and is highly addictive.” Morey adds. His talent is his very own passion and drives him to keep pursuing his art.
He wishes that the government could take the arts more seriously and create theatres countrywide to encourage all kinds of arts in the communities. His message to upcoming artists is to record good content, be consistent and to put it out there, “Chema chajitembeza.” He claims.
In addition to cracking ribs at the pulpit, he is a coffee and maize farmer.
You can also find him at Mwendani FM as a radio comedian everyday from 7am to 10am and from 4pm to 6pm.
